BACKGROUND PROFILE

My name is Roger Ho. I grew up in a sportsman family, my father and brothers were all involved in sports and fitness. All of them represented their schools, districts and community clubs in soccer, basketball, volleyball, roller skating, track and Field etc during their younger days. Their influences got onto me, so much so that my interest in sports and fitness grew day by day. At the age of 7, my favourite sport was football and till today, it has not changed. I played almost everyday and even dreamt of becoming a professional footballer and representing Singapore one day but somehow I ended up playing table tennis and represented my school in the National Inter-School Table Tennis Championship for 6 years. Though I did well in table tennis, my goal of representing Singapore in football was still in my mind. Finally got my break at the age of 16, I was selected to represent my constituency in the National (Under-16 and19) Inter-constituency Football Tournament and Club level in the National Football League.

At the age of 19, I was called up for National Service in the Army. After six months of Basic Military and Section Leader Training, I was selected to attend the Physical Training Instructor Course. After graduating from the course, my life took a 360% turn as I decided to make a professional career as a Physical Training Instructor (PTI) in the Army and dropped the idea of playing professional football and representing Singapore though I did represented SAFSA in my earlier years. Besides football, I had also represented SAFSA in squash since 1985. Since then, I enrolled and continued to upgrade myself in all the sports and fitness related courses such as sports organisation, administration, coaching and officiating etc.

To prepare myself for a higher command post in management and lecturing, I need to step up a gear. Therefore, I went on to attend several leaderships, professional related courses and most importantly an academic certification which lead me to Advanced Diploma in Sport and Leisure Management and Master Degree in Sport Management, UK

Singapore Students’ Special Souvenirs from Sheffield
By Clare Morris

A trio of Singapore students took extra special souvenirs home from their first visit to Sheffield – they all left the city with a Masters degree.

Esther Wong, Roger Ho See Bin and William Tan Soon Seng, who have been studying in Singapore for the Sheffield Hallam accredited MSc in Sport Management, flew into England for a five day stay in Sheffield to attend their graduation ceremonies.

‘Though it was tough going through all the modules, I particularly enjoyed my study school where the Sheffield Hallam lecturers came to town,’ said Roger.

Esther, 26, is a children’s fencing coach, and is also expecting the MSc to help her progress in her career.

‘The course has been enjoyable and my company is expanding so there are now more opportunities for me when it comes to management.’

William Tan Soon Seng, 46, who is Chief Instructor at Singapore’s School of Physical Training, said he was delighted to be in Sheffield attending his graduation. ‘It is a once in a lifetime experience,’ he added.

The MSc in Sport Management is taught at study schools in Singapore by Sheffield academics and also through internet learning.

It's important to remain a good role model for my children and I knew that studying for an MSc could create more opportunities at work.' Roger was impressed with the distance learning approach. 'It's a good fit for any professional - even a 45 year old soldier like me. Without the need to leave home for a year abroad, I saved on transportation, housing and food costs and even continued working full time.'

Roger is a member of the Singapore Table Tennis Association (STTA) and regularly officiates as a deputy referee. 'I've umpired in several major table tennis championships including the Singapore Pro-Tour and the Commonwealth Games. The great thing about Singapore is the public's growing interest in sports and fitness.
